HP notebook periodically switches off the screen and keyboard
Around 14 months ago, I bought an HP notebook for my relative. They need it for college. It works absolutely fine until about a few days ago. And then the screen switches off. But the notebook continues to work because music is still playing. But what is quite strange is that it is not possible to restart.
Normally you would hold the power button and in a few seconds computer will restart. But not in this case. I have never seen anything like that and typically when you hold the power button, the motherboard will detect this and force power off. Initially, I thought to update firmware but then my relative gave me the reasonable idea to search the internet. So, I did. And it turns out that problem is well known.
Here are a few examples:
Basically, this is some cable that got damaged from opening and closing the lid of the notebook and it sent the signal to the notebook that the lid is closed. And then the notebook will switch off the screen and keyboard because there is no point in having them on because the user cannot see anything or press any buttons.
But because it looks like the cable (or some sensor) is broken, it sends the wrong single and it is not possible to use the notebook. Even if we managed to restart it, it still would not work because the notebook believes that the lid is closed.
And the worst part is that after my relative saw this issue for the first time, it repeated over and over every hour or so. As a result, this issue must be addressed urgently because that notebook is a workhorse for my relative.
To fix this issue we decided to disconnect that cable. Firstly you need to take off the back cover of the notebook. You can use this video:

You will see the blue ribbon at 1:48 on top. This is a cable we need to disconnect. It is located on the side that connects the screen and body of the notebook. Here are more pictures from the internet: https://imgur.com/5Q2whvs and with disconnected cable: https://imgur.com/eJbUUmC
Here are my picture:
To disconnect the cable you need to turn the black tab that points up that video or right on my picture. So you need to point your finger, nail down (your nail should touch that blue ribbon) towards that black tab. Then pick it up with your nail and move it up. It should easily open and you will see something like this picture where the tab is open.
Then pull the blue ribbon to release that cable. Then I would recommend covering the end of this cable with electric tape to avoid accidental contact and short. After that problem should be fixed.
I hope it helps someone.
