Tesla, the saga continues

Just as an update after my first technician visit. Just a reminder initially I had the following problems:

  1. I cannot unplug the charger when it is finished charging. I need to unlock the charging port from Tesla app first.
  2. I cannot open the trunk by pressing a button on the back of my trunk to open even though I have my phone with me.

And as turns out, it looks like both of these issues are correct behavior. Let me explain them one by one

Charger issue

It turns out that by design, you cannot unlock the charger when your car is locked. You will have to unlock your car to unplug it, or you have to unlock the charging port from Tesla app as I’m usually doing. I was told that it is an intended behavior. Perhaps Tesla can add a setting to allow unplugging the charger when the car is parked at home. It turns out that most videos I have seen were happening at the house of the person who recorded the video. And I think most of these people set an option that does not lock the car when their car is parked at home.

I prefer to have my car locked, because of these reasons:

  • I have an outside entrance to my garage and technically somebody can break in and access my car. Normally, I don’t have anything valuable, but one day I may.
  • I like that the car folds mirrors when locked and I have more space to walk and less chance to damage them.

I think it is some kind of security feature that prevents somebody to unplug the charger from your car and charge their car instead. In general, this is not a big deal for me, I just thought that something is wrong with my car or with my charger.

Trunk issue

This one is more interesting. It turns out, that if I enable the feature that unlocks only the driver door (which can be controlled in Controls > Vehicle > Driver Door Unlock Mode) then I cannot open the trunk using a button on the back. It turns out that it is a security feature because somebody can open the trunk when you are close to the car and steal stuff or attack you. It is not a big deal for me, but a bit step back from my Honda CR-V where that feature works that way.

Perhaps eventually Tesla can add some setting that will allow opening the trunk when the car is at a home location or allow to open the trunk when unlocking only the driver door feature is enabled.

More issues

But I also found out that there are some paint issues with door hinges and some small parts of them were not painted. I made a second appointment to fix these issues because I am afraid that these parts will rust and eventually damage the car. I’m planning to have that car for a long time, and I would like to make sure that car will be able to hold.

Software update

My car received its first software update. And there are 2 features I particularly like in that update:

  1. Fan speed control on auto. Sometimes when I jump into my car and there is a big difference between the interior temperature and desired one, the car will try to reach the desired temperature as fast as possible and blow cold or hot air quite aggressively when climate control is set on Auto. Now it is possible to set it to Low, Med, or High to make it more or less gradual.
  2. Setting to turn signals can automatically deactivate upon completing a lane change. Sometimes I forgot to switch the indication off when I change lanes. It does not happen often, but it happened, and I like that there is an option to do it for me.

And I would like to state again, that it is something that is not possible for a traditional car. It works how it works and unless it poses some safety risk, nobody will ever change it.

Wall Connector

I connected my Wall Connector to my Wi-Fi network. As it turned out, Wall Connector has its own firmware, and it can update it when connected to the internet. But so far, I couldn’t update it that way. Wall Connector states that it is connected to the internet but when I try to check for a new version, it cannot connect to some server. But there is a possibility to download firmware to your phone and then upload it manually to the Wall Connector and it is what I did.

I hope it will be helpful to someone.
