Ethernet over video coaxial

My house is relatively new but unfortunately in Unites States most houses have video coaxial cable and not ethernet. I seen few houses with ethernet but they still quite rare. On other side apartment where I lived before I bough house has ethernet sockets in every room. It also has USB sockets on pretty much every power outlet. Really convenient. Anyway, after I bought my house, I have to solve connectivity problem.

I had 2 ethernet sockets: 1 on the kitchen and it was built with house and second one was installed to transfer video and audio data to TV during selling process. And every room has coaxial video cable connector.

Initially I though about removing coaxial cable and please ethernet instead. Basically, you attach ethernet cable to coaxial and pull coaxial. But unfortunately, coaxial cable was attached to walls to prevent cable moving. Initially I though it is in kind of pipes, but I asked builder and they confirmed that cable secured to walls. Placing new ethernet cable in walls is major project that will cost a lot of not really viable to me.

Somebody may ask why I didn’t use Wi-Fi. Well Wi-Fi is not really reliable. Unfortunately, Wi-Fi consortium prefers to make Wi-Fi faster then make it more reliable. There are a lot of problem in many Wi-Fi implementations. It depends on weather. It depends on your neighbors. One misbehaving device can ruin your Wi-Fi and you will spend hours investigating why it does not work.

Anyway, after investigation I found that I have to use coaxial cable. After all, it is wire that can transfer signal. Moreover, my house has quite good coaxial cable that can transfer at very high speed. And then I sought that I’m definitely not that first person with that problem. And I was right. After few days of researching I found this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013J7O3X0. Just to note it is not paid advertisement or anything like that.

It is very simple to use, and it worked like a charm. Since 2017 I had absolutely no problems with that device. I just plugged it and forgot about it. One device in my office to convert ethernet to coaxial and one at my connectivity cabinet to convert from coaxial to ethernet. I didn’t do exact tests to find if it is gigabit speeds, but it is definitely faster that 100 megabits.

Note: There is only one drawback for using coaxial cable: it adds few milliseconds to your ping. As result even ping to my router took 2-3 milliseconds. Normally if I had ethernet cable it would be less than 1 millisecond. I knew about that before I bought this device and I mentioning it here, because for someone it could be critical.

I hope it helps someone
